About this position

As a Senior Research Scientist with the Exobiology Branch, Space Science and Astrobiology Division, you will perform planetary and astrobiology research, identifying evidence of past habitable environments, recommending high-grading targets for biosignature search, and exploring the coevolution of life and the ancient Earth system, where findings will be applied to NASA planetary and astrobiology missions to Mars, Venus, and other solar system bodies

Conducts research of the origin, composition, structure, and evolution of the bodies of the solar system, including the planets, their satellites, the Earth and Moon, meteorites, asteroids, comets and dust.
Conduct research in reconstructing planetary surface conditions on ancient Earth and Mars though synthesis of mineralogical, sedimentological, and geochemical data.
Conduct research aimed at identifying evidence of past habitable environments, recommending high-grading targets for biosignature search, and exploring the coevolution of life and ancient Earth system where findings will be applied to NASA missions.
Lead efforts to develop the next-generation x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) instruments for future NASA planetary and astrobiology missions.
Serve as subject matter expert advising the Center, Agency, and broader scientific community. Provide leadership on Science Definition Teams and/or Participating Scientist programs, Mission Operations, and/or Instrument PI for NASA missions.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level:

Leading or developing X-ray based instrumentation for materials analysis on space missions;
Providing technical guidance and leadership to teams working on science or research programs;
Developing and proposing funding in the field of planetary and astrobiology research.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in a) engineering from a college or university that has at least one ABET accredited engineering program or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.

*Note: A computer science curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
