ATLAS CORPS FELLOWSHIP AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS 2022

Atlas Corps invites social change leaders from around the world to apply for our 12-month US-based and 14-month Blended In-Person Fellowships in the United States and our Virtual Leadership Institute!

12-month In-Person Fellowship in the U.S.

The Atlas Corps In-Person Fellowship is a 12 month leadership development program in the United States for the world’s top social change leaders. Fellows serve full-time with Host Organizations to develop leadership skills and learn effective practices through the Atlas Corps Global Leadership Lab professional development series and networking opportunities with other Fellows. The U.S.-based component of the Fellowship allows participants to engage in group cultural activities like a D.C. Monuments Tour, sporting events, U.S. holiday celebrations, and more. While the In-Person Fellowship is typically 12 months, the length can be extended by an additional 6 months upon agreement of the Fellow and Host Organization.

Atlas Corps sponsors the J-1 Trainee visa and covers most visa expenses. Atlas Corps also provides each Fellow with a living stipend to cover basic expenses (food, local transportation, and shared housing), a monthly phone plan, emergency health and travel insurance, and round-trip international airfare.

In addition to full-time service at their Host Organization, Fellows will also participate in over 200 hours of in-person and virtual training through our Global Leadership Lab.

In addition to full-time service at their Host Organization (an average of 40 hours per week), Fellows will also participate in over 200 hours of in-person and virtual training through our Global Leadership Lab.

Through this Fellowship program, Atlas Corps seeks to advance the U.S. State Department Education and Cultural Exchange Bureau’s Mission: To promote mutual understanding through people-to-people exchanges and to further U.S. foreign policy objectives by engaging international exchange visitors and American communities in a diversity of positive, safe, and enriching educational, cultural and professional exchange programs.

Blended (Remote and US-based) 14-Month Fellowship

The Blended Fellowship combines virtual service from Fellows’ home countries with service in the United States, along with in-person and virtual training through our Global Leadership Lab.

The total length of the Blended Fellowship (including the remote and in-person components) is typically 14 months but can be extended by agreement of the Fellow and Host. While the specific Fellowship structure for each placement will be defined based on the potential placement opportunity, the typical Blended Fellowship includes:

  • Service from Fellows’ home countries: Fellows serve remotely full-time (an average of 40 hours a week) with U.S.-based Host Organizations until they can safely travel to the U.S. for in-person service. Fellows and Host Organizations determine a weekly schedule that makes sense for both of them, which usually includes at least 4 hours of daily overlap with U.S. business hours. During remote service, Fellows receive a stipend based on the local cost of living that would cover lodging for one person, basic utilities, food, local transportation, and financial support for the technology necessary to meet Host Organization requirements remotely. Atlas Corps would also support the Fellow in obtaining a U.S. visa during this time.
  • Service in the U.S.: Following the remote service period, Fellows will arrive in the U.S. for in-person service with their Host Organizations. Since many US Embassies around the world are still operating at a reduced capacity, there will be 3 different US arrival dates based on flight and visa availability. While in the U.S., Fellows receive a basic stipend, more modest than that of the remote period relative to the local cost of living. The U.S. stipend is only meant to cover shared housing, basic utilities, food, and local transportation.
  • Global Leadership Lab & Global Network: In addition to full-time service at their Host Organization, throughout the entire Fellowship, Fellows will also participate in over 200 hours of in-person and virtual training through our Global Leadership Lab, and join our global network of 1,200+ social change leaders in 112 countries.

The Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute is an online learning community for global social change leaders based on the established Atlas Corps Global Leadership Lab. Participants, known as Atlas Corps Scholars, enhance their professional skills, build their global networks, and prepare for leadership in their home communities.

Themes

The Leadership Institute focuses on three themes: Developing Self, Developing Others, and Leading Movements.

Format

The Leadership Institute is organized into five online learning modules: Orientation, Developing Self, Developing Others, Leading Movements, Reflection Retreat. This five-month online program includes keynote speakers, interactive workshops, self-led activities, discussion groups, and community-building activities with leading U.S. organizations and leaders.
