Duties

The Cataloger Technician provides essential support to the Cataloging Section under the supervision of the Head of the Cataloging Section. The Incumbent serves as general support to cataloging and acquisitions including, but not limited to, (a) creation or adaptation of records for bibliographic control/ access that meet the standards for initial bibliographic control; (b) searching for bibliographic records in all languages in the Integrated Library System (ILS) that forms the backbone of the Library's online catalog and OCLC bibliographic database; (c) creating Library of Congress records derived from records found in Online Computerize Library Center (OCLC) and other national library catalogs: and creating holding records in the ILS; (d) assists completing bibliographic records by creating local and end-processing data in the Integrated Library System (ILS); (e) assists with PDF format workflow by entering metadata into PDF files; and (f) maintaining cataloging statistics for reporting.



The incumbent works with a variety of print and non-print monographic materials from the region of Southeast Asian (Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam). The incumbent is required to independently search and create Initial Bibliographic Control (IBC) level records for export to priority acquisitions system (providing initia1 bibliographic control and access) to materials in all formats. The incumbent searches complex bibliographic records in the international database of over 2 billion bibliographic records Online Computerize Library Center (OCLC) and individual library catalogers for those not on Online Computerize Library Center (OCLC). The incumbent updates Initial Bibliographic Control  (ILS) recordings including the addition of holding records for monographs and serials, releasing the records to Online Computerize Library Center (OCLC), and allowing records to be displayed in the public catalog.



The incumbent works in a highly automated environment creating new bibliographic records in the official Library of Congress catalog available as the public online catalog (catalog.loc.gov) as well as the largest international bibliographic utility Online Computerize Library Center (OCLC/Wor1dCat: worldcat.oclc.org). The Library of Congress (LOC) /Jakarta and Branch Office records are often the only record available to libraries for bibliographic records and are used by national libraries in the region.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: At least three years of experience in an academic or research library or resource center serving research needs of faculty, students, or research clientele is required


 


JOB KNOWLEDGE: Good knowledge of descriptive cataloging rules especially in determining correctness and determine level of additional cataloging work required. Good knowledge of the organization of knowledge in libraries in terms of bibliographic control and access.

Education Requirements:

  • College (2 years) or University Studies is required

Evaluations:

LANGUAGE: Good Working Knowledge Speaking/Reading/Writing in English and Fluent Speaking/Reading/Writing in Indonesian languages are required. (This may be tested).


 


SKILLS AND ABILITIES : Skills in: performing detailed and accurate work in cataloging of various formats; utilizing effective work techniques to use time effectively and productively, on own initiative, so as to complete tasks in a timely manner; accurately following oral and written instructions; using computers and software. Ability to work with precision and to pay careful attention to detail. Advanced search skills.
